History of Pratteln Castle
The castle is the quintessential landmark of Pratteln. Today it is open to the public: its rooms host exhibitions and events, among other things.
Planning for the moated castle, built by the Lords of Eptingen in the village center, began in 1275. It was destroyed in the devastating earthquake of 1356 and—unlike the castle on the Madlenchöpfli—rebuilt. The castle was the site of several fierce battles. In 1521, it came into the possession of the city of Basel, which sold it to wealthy Basel citizens. The municipality acquired it in 1773, filled in the moat, and removed the surrounding walls. The building served as an almshouse until 1908. A comprehensive renovation was completed in 1968. Today, this Pratteln landmark is open to the public. Its rooms host exhibitions and events, as well as the weekly meetings of the municipal and citizens' council.
